MATTE BLACK LIGHTING ROUNDUP

Matte black finishes are showing up everywhere, from lighting fixtures to painted walls to cabinets and even free-standing soaking tubs. While black is a constant trend in design, matte black is becoming a hugely popular finish in kitchens, bathrooms, and everything in between. With its velvety finish that is both classic and edgy, the look can work with many styles from farmhouse to modern to industrial.

We asked the experts to weigh in on designing with the color black.  “Don’t be afraid of using black in small or large doses. It gives great contrast and goes with everything. With the current trend of rustic farmhouse, I am constantly getting asked for black light fixtures,” says designer Theo Thompson.

Classic and Cohesive

“Lighting is one of the most important things in achieving a cohesive look. This wine bar was designed to have a chic bar feel with classic appeal. The Alston pendent in matte black added a boutique look to the space,” says designer Theo Thompson.

BOLD AND SOPHISTICATED

“I get significant requests for all-white palettes, and this proves that a kitchen doesn't need to be white to be beautiful. I love the unique chain link on the matte black Alston fixture. Its sophisticated simplicity is the magic in the air," says Kelli Vogelgesang of West Bay Homes.

MINIMAL SIMPLICITY

“In this specific home, we did a lot of modern black metal details with softer white oak wood tones. I loved how the juxtaposition of the two different finishes and colors resulted in a modern yet warm home,” says designer Yvonne Christensen.

“Black is a highly adaptable color; it adds such a sense of grounding and sophistication. Experiment with black! Getting out of your comfort zone and combine unpredictable colors, materials, textures, patterns, and scale, these are all hallmarks of what makes the art medium of design fantastic,” says design developer Kelli Vogelgesang of West Bay Homes.
