Brighten Your Home to Help Beat the Winter Blues

Daylight hours are starting to get shorter, so make the most of your long days spent inside with just a few simple design changes that can make a big difference. It’s important to adjust your lighting in the winter to replace the lack of natural sunshine. Check out these easy ways to freshen your decor to help keep your home bright and cheery.

 Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Hanging a large mirror, particularly across from a chandelier, opens up the space and allows more light in. Using mirrored surfaces in a dim room can help brighten the space by reflecting any available light, adding sparkle and interest. Use other reflective surfaces, such as glossy art, glass, polished stone or mirrored furniture in your scheme.

Eye Level Lighting with Wall Mounts

Whether above the bed, flanking the bathroom mirror or mantle, wall mounts cast a cozy glow that makes any room feel comfortable. Rather than one intense light source, add a pair of low-wattage fixtures to the room to create a softer light. Unlike lamps, wall mounts save space, clutter and adds character and charm to walls.

Dining with Light-Diffusing Lamp Shades

Light that’s dispersed throughout the room can be more flattering than light that’s directed in a single spot. To get that ambient glow, choose semi-opaque lamp shades in light tones. If your existing light shades are dingy or outdated, clean or replace them with fresh white ones. They’ll look crisp and diffuse light better.

You can still amp up your dining room light in the fall and winter by placing higher-wattage bulbs in the light fixtures. Choose daylight bulbs, with a slightly blue-tinted light, and cozier lights with a more yellow tone.

Maximize Natural Light

It’s natural, our mood lifts with sunny weather and time spent outdoors. So, ditch the heavy window coverings or keep curtains open until nightfall. Choose light paint colors that will help to reflect light, specifically finishes that have a slight sheen.
